How it Began

2013 - A Brave start!

Leith Community Archers (LCA) was established in 2013.  It all began with a community event screening of the film Brave followed by an Archery trial session. Brave tells a story about Merida, the impetuous but courageous daughter of Scottish King Fergus and Queen Elinor, is a skilled archer who wants to carve out her own path in life. Her defiance of an age-old tradition angers the Highland lords and leads to chaos in the kingdom. Merida seeks help from an eccentric witch, who grants her an ill-fated wish. Now, Merida must discover the true meaning of courage and undo a beastly curse before it's too late...

100 people turned up to watch the film and take part in the Archery trial session.  The event was organised by Inspiring Leith and hosted by Bethany Christian Trust in Leith.  The aim was to build a community around activities and develop and encourage participants to gain and share new skills.  Inspiring Leith is part of a Link Up community project run by Inspiring Scotland.

2015 - Charity status.

In April 2015 Leith Community Archers (LCA) achieved Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) status. LCA is now managed by a committee of board members, club members and instructors and is a registered charity in Scotland - Charity No.SC045559.

The main aims and objectives of the club are:-

  • The advancement of public participation in sport.
  • Improve the conditions of life for the persons and participants of our club through the provision and organisation of our facilities and our recreational activities.

The club has also adopted a strong sense of community awareness. Our aims are to reduce the effects of poverty and strengthen community bonding and equality.  Archery is a very inclusive sport and in addition, we try to keep session prices as low as we can too.

The club sessions are run by club members, volunteer instructors, and volunteers. Members can be voted into a board position at the AGM to lead the direction of the club.

We have three sessions on Thursday evenings during term time at Leith Academy school. The first one is a family session followed by two adult sessions. Our focus is on indoor archery using Recurve bows.

We are part of Archery GB and Archery Scotland.
